Why drywall cracks

Houses move. Seasonal expansion and contraction, lumber drying out in newer homes, minor settling — drywall is rigid, so movement shows up as cracks, usually along seams and inside corners where stress concentrates.

Normal cracks

Cracks that deserve attention

We fix drywall; we do not diagnose foundations. If a crack looks structural, we will tell you to get a structural opinion before we patch it — patching a moving crack is just scheduling the same job twice.

How a proper crack fix works

We open the crack slightly, fill it, embed tape (paper tape, properly bedded — not just mesh over the top), feather two to three coats, sand, and texture to match. The tape is the key: it bridges the movement. Caulk-only or mud-only crack fixes come back within a year.

Questions homeowners ask us

Are drywall cracks serious?

Usually not — hairline cracks along seams are normal house movement. Wide, growing, or recurring cracks deserve a closer look before patching.

Will a crack come back after repair?

Not if it is taped properly. Mud-only or caulk-only fixes come back; a properly bedded tape joint holds.

Can I just caulk a drywall crack?

You can, and it will look fine for a few months. Then it comes back. Proper repair means tape and mud, not caulk.
